Editing a Mockup [Illustrator] HELP

So the teacher gave us a psd file which shows the facebook template, with a cover and profile image. I need to change both in Illustrator. Anyone knows what are the steps to follow, I am sure it have something to do with the layers. He showed us the steps last week but rushing. Saw that if he changed something in one separate document, it would change the cover f.e.
